Crops To Grow In Winter

Even though we still have our fair share of cold days, Zimbabwe does not have the harsh winters that other countries have. The good news is that most green leafy veggies will grow regardless of how much frost we get.

Every backyard farmer should make an attempt to plant all of the essential veggies, as gardening is simple and does not require many hours of back-breaking labor to produce successful harvests. A farmer recently inquired about cucumber seedlings for use in an open field. I questioned if he was aware that it was now winter, and that cucumbers will not flourish due to cold weather unless grown in a protected environment such as the greenhouse. This topic came about as a result of my chat with this new farmer.

This farmer's lack of knowledge highlights the fact that not everyone knows what to grow when the seasons change.

The rainy season has come to an end. Summer crops are being harvested by most farmers and household gardeners, and land is being prepared for winter crops swiftly. There is a lot to learn for beginner gardeners, but the most essential thing is to get started since it gets better with practice.t thrive in cold weather unless they are cultivated in a sheltered location like a greenhouse. Among the preparatory processes, the farmer should be able to carefully select a vegetable site and, most significantly, adequately prepare the soil and plant the appropriate vegetable species and numbers at this time of year.

After determining the size of the garden, consideration must be given to the vegetables that must be planted in accordance with the family's size. Because most vegetables require appropriate sunlight to thrive, it is critical to select a location that receives ample sunlight and is well-drained. Two zones, one for leafy vegetables and the other for root vegetables, can be created. Healthy plants require proper soil preparation. To be able to improve your soil according to guidelines, you need to have it tested. The acidity of soil can be assessed by measuring its pH, and lime and fertilizer requirements can then be estimated. The addition of aged compost, on the other hand, will have positive benefits. Fresh manure should not be used since it can induce root forking in root vegetables.

Vegetables for winter

Cabbage, rape, tsunga, broccoli, cauliflower, covo rugare, lettuce, Chinese cabbage, bok choy, and a variety of other green leafy vegetables are common. These function admirably with the addition of old manure and can be readily maintained organically in a backyard family garden. Root vegetables such as carrots, beets, radishes, turnips, onions, and garlic are all winter crops that should be planted now. It is ideal to purchase seedlings from nurseries if seeds have not yet been sawn. Root vegetables, especially carrots that can be thinned and eaten as young carrots, can be sawn straight on the ground. If you don't have access to a sunny spot, lettuce can tolerate some shadow. Try a variety of vegetables to avoid being bored with the same one year after year. Rugare is a nice example.

I've seen gardeners harvesting shoots and cuttings from their old rugare plants and replanting them over and over. Perhaps planting hybrid rugare for a change might be a good idea. Seeds and seedlings are available at most seed stores and nurseries. Some gardeners seemed to be apprehensive about attempting new kinds. I must admit that I was one of them, gradually accepting hybrid varieties. Regardless of new types — sweet cabbage — one of the oldies usually has a spot in my garden around this time of year since the cold weather enhances its flavor. A small amount of most vegetables of your choosing should be planted in the backyard garden. In this tight economy, having a self-sufficient garden for fresh, nutrient-dense food is the way to go.
